Southwest Airlines announces service to Minneapolis/St. Paul

Wow.  This certainly caught us by surprise.  Not because we weren’t expecting it, but because we thought it would never happen!  But finally after years of speculation, Southwest AIrlines, the nation’s most famous low-cost carrier, has decided to enter the Twin Cities market.

Unfortunately, we’re not experts on why or why not Southwest would serve Minneapolis.  However, we can conclude that Minneapolis is a very active airport nonetheless, and that the Twin CIties metropolitan area is one that is thriving with business.  Last time we checked, it is the home to dozens of Fortune 500 businesses.

However, it’s possible to assume that Southwest was somewhat timid to come to an airport that is dominated by a single carrier: Northwest.  Whether or not that that’s the truth is impossible to be determined.  But the point we would like to make is that this is tremendous news for travelers in Minneapolis and in the upper midwest.  Let the low far experience bring you happiness!  Or at least attempt to…

Currently, the one route that Southwest has planned from Minneapolis is to Chicago Midway, one of Southwest’s primary hubs.  This link will create an additional 50 destinations served by Southwest Airlines.  All flights will be conducted out of the Humphrey Terminal starting in March 2009.  Until then…stay tuned.  It’s a great day for MSP travelers!
